Job Summary and Objectives   

Responsible for fiber optic splicing and maintenance and installation of customer services on our fiber-to-the-home network. This position will also supervise and perform quality control on outside drop contractors.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  1. Fiber optic splicing (fusion and mechanical).

  2. Fiber optic troubleshooting, including OTDR and light meter readings.

  3. Perform construction related duties including buried and aerial drops and network extensions.

  4. Use Interpersonal skills for interaction with customers for installation requirements and issue resolution.

  5. Provides oversight and performs quality control of external drop and splicing contractors.

  6. Can work from heights including pole, ladder, and bucket truck.

  7. Able to work in inclement weather.

  8. Work with electronic maps, document and maintain records of work performed.

  9. Operate company vehicles safely.

  10. Aerial and Underground maintenance of fiber optic lines.

  11. Preserves confidentiality of company issues when relating to staff, customers, and public.

  12. Supports the Bylaws, guidelines, policies and philosophies of the company at all times.

  13. Supports the Mission Statement and Core Values at all times.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Outside Plant Manager

Directs: Drop Contractors

    1. Internal

      1. Outside Plant Manager - To provide assistance as required; to confer on problems; to seek necessary approvals and to keep informed of departmental and company policies and procedures, and to discuss any unusual situations affecting the job. 

      2. Installation Technicians – To work in conjunction with the Installation Technicians to get timely resolution of member’s issues.

      3. GIS Mapping Technician –To turn in required information on installations performed to maintain the integrity of our electronic mapping system.

      4. Customer Service Department – Under supervision of Construction Manager, work with customer service on subscriber and landowner issues to ensure contractors are performing work on schedule and all issues assigned have resolution.  Communicate with customer service on issue resolutions.  To ensure continued access to private rights of way, all landowner issues must have resolution.

    2. External

      1. Contractors – Oversees direction of assigned drop construction contractors working on the system at any given time.  To request and provide assistance as required and to confer on problems as required to maintain efficient and effective systems.

      2. Subscribers – To support and assist subscribers to access the network. 

      3. To maintain good relations in all contacts with the public.

Physical Requirements

    1. Body Movements – This position is rated at a Level 3.0 for PCP testing.

    2. Visual and Audio Acuity - Visual and audio acuity is an essential function of this   position.

    3. Travel – Frequent daytime travel across the entire service territory for installation inspection and subscriber and landowner issues.    Infrequent overnight travel for meetings and training.

    4. Substance Abuse Testing - Must pass all random and mandatory testing. 

    5. This position requires the ability to operate company vehicles safely.

Education

    1. High School or GED equivalent. 

    2. Some college or post high school education preferred.

Experience

    1. Telecommunications and fiber optics construction

    2. Drop construction

    3. Fiber Splicing

    4. Background in home construction/ remodeling

    5. Experience with Bucket truck

    6. Experience with trenching/plowing equipment.                   

General Skills

    1. Must be able to build drops to required specifications and convey these specifications to drop contractors.

    2. Must have general PC abilities including Microsoft Office and tablet operating skills.  Must be able to operate and navigate electronic maps. 

Working Conditions

    1. Field or office working conditions and required to work in all types of weather.

    2. Some irregular hours and travel may be required.

    3. Heavy lifting and strenuous tasks required.

    4. After an offer of employment has been made, a physical examination is required which will include drug testing.
