BEWARE: We have had a new type of scam reported today of which we want to make you all aware.
Bad actors are purchasing Google Ads to ensure their false information is pushed to the top of a google search for a business, particularly with key words like "bill pay." One such ad that a gentleman ran across this morning gave him an 888 number that is not affiliated with the cooperative. He spoke to a male with a foreign accent and made a payment for what he believed to be his East Central Electric bill. Soon after providing his card information, he received alerts from his card issuer about attempted transactions for 100’s of dollars.
These ads do not stay active for long, so at this time we don't have a specific bad actor to report to Google for spoofing our business and misleading our members. If you happen to see one of these ads, please take a screenshot and send it to us.
